The mandate was to design a music poster based on John Cage’s Four Walls music album. The result needed to showcase the mood and feelings of the album visually based on my interpretation of the music. This is the first time I have designed a project based solely on music, and I was happy to learn more about a music genre I barely knew.

Four walls poster mockup 1

The abstract nature of John Cage’s work is difficult to portray because most of these tracks do not have a continuous tone, but are rather extremely experimental. I needed to think outside the box to imagine any visual content that could represent this music, and these turned out to be very subjective opinions. I knew I was looking for something that expressed contradiction and contrast, the music made me experience a world where harmony and dissonance, chaos and order existed side by side.

The final result delivers a direction combining geometric photography and dynamic typography to create a sense of order in the chaos. The photography was coincidentally taken(it was actually an elevator), but through Photoshop manipulation it became
the most suitable image. The composition and the content of this picture were very much in line with my understanding of the music, representing the cluttered order I wanted. The orange highlighted a strong impact on the black and white photo and the hint of blue, which was the complementary color, enhanced even more the sense of contradiction.
